Phlebodium aureum
Polypodium leucotomos or Calaguala
Rhizome
Polypodium, like Mistletoe, often grows on host trees such as oak, historically, this was thought to greatly enhance its medicinal value. Used since the 1st Century as a purge and gentle laxative for conditions such as hepatitis, jaundice, to stimulate bile secretions and phlegm.
Interestingly, Mistletoe and Polypodium have both been clinically studied and found supportive to the immune system and the reduction of tumour formation.
Recent research has discovered that this fern from Central and South America is one of the strongest and most powerful anti-oxidants for the skin. The most effective properties have been found to be its benefits for photo damaged skin. Growing evidence indicates protection against solar UV radiation. These benefits have been attributed to the phenolic compounds, including chlorogenic acid, coumaric acid, vanillic acid and the potent oxidation inhibitors caffeic and ferulic. The activity of endogenous antioxidant systems are enhanced and responsible for blocking the formation of reactive oxygen species. Clinical studies have shown that Polypodium L is a powerful antioxidant, by scavenging free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Oral consumption has shown to reduce DNA damage, inhibit photo sensitization and reduce UV induced sunburn cells.
For many years these extracts have been used to treat psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, polymorphic light eruption, sunburn, squamous cell carcinoma, and photo-aging
‘Anapsos’ is a Spanish brand name for a drug containing Polypodium L, used to treat Psoroasis.
